October 5, 2010 Fundraising Update
To date, SAFE has raised $74,400 towards the $200,000 required as a 20% local match for the Maine DOT Quality Community Program grant the town has applied for to build the Pathway. This grant will fund the remaining 80% of the million dollar project costs, or about $800,000. If Cape Elizabeth's application is successful, they will get the Pathway built for a fraction of its total cost.
To re-energize the fund raising process, the SAFE committee set a goal of raising another $25,600 by year's end.

Shore Road Path Fund Raising Effort Launched! The SAFE Team has secured non-profit status and is seeking donations to provide the local matching funds required by construction funding grants.
While it is expected that the Path will be built with federal bicycle and pedestrian Traffic Enhancement grant funds provided through the Maine Department of Transportation’s Quality Community Program, these grants require that local communities provide 20% of the total project amount. With an estimated cost of approximately $1,000,000 for the whole project, the SAFE group is planning to raise about $200,000 to cover the local matching funds.
“The town council was pretty clear in saying that while the town would commit funds to final design and permitting, they would not provide the 20% local match’ said SAFE Treasurer Jim Kerney. “We are seeking to mobilize community support one last time to raise these necessary matching funds, and with luck, construction could begin by 2011.”
SAFE plans to raise the funds through a combination of general and specific appeals for support. Non-residents are welcome to contribute.
“This is an incredible opportunity for the community to build a great project that will enhance safety and access along this popular walking road.” says Kerney. “And with the grant funds, it’s an incredible bargain--we get .80 cents for every .20 we put in!”
Donations towards the local match for the project can be mailed to Shore Road Path, PO Box 215, Cape Elizabeth, ME 04107.
All donors will receive a letter confirming their tax deductible contribution to the local match fund raising effort.
